EXAMPLES OF THE WORK WE HAVE DONE

Worked with the Census Bureau to understand reasons why Latinos, African Americans, and Asian immigrants have lower participation rates in the census data collection process; identified motivators and messages to increase their participation

Adapted consumer materials on aging, mental health, and substance abuse for people whose preferred language is not English; languages included Chinese, Korean, Navajo, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese

Worked with the newest immigrant populations of indigenous Indians from Mexico and Central America; for the Monterey First Five Commission, conducted focus groups with immigrant Triqui- and Mixteco-speaking parents about the program’s effect on their preschool children

Developed and implemented a technical assistance and training curriculum and materials in communities and with educational institutions in Eastern Europe and Latin America

Reviewed labor market trends and national-level data in 26 countries of Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, working with local researchers in each country

Conducted more than 40,000 interviews with migrant and seasonal farm workers, collecting data on demographics, employment, workplace safety, and occupational health surveillance

Reviewed Spanish-language pesticide safety symbols, messages, and formats for appropriateness and language

Examined barriers to low-income, limited-English-speaking Vietnamese mothers’ access to the Federal childcare assistance insurance program

Reviewed appropriateness and effectiveness of health-related radio programming for Spanish, Mixtec, and Trique speakers

Developed plain-language English and Spanish health materials for older adults

Reviewed the Spanish-language Census long form for appropriateness and effectiveness of language

Conducted assessments of the effectiveness of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Diversity Program; market tested its diversity policies and protocols; and expanded research analyzing USPS recruitment methods

Provided cultural competency training for State agency staff and providers who work in substance abuse treatment programs

Established a cultural competency and diversity network to improve the cultural competency of products and identify new avenues for the dissemination of information

Selected three science-based prevention programs and developed three Adaptation Guides to facilitate program development and implementation in tribal communities

Conducted evaluations of English- and Spanish-language teacher training sponsored by the Centers of Excellence for Teacher Training throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, with culturally tailored research in eight countries

Developed a national assessment of the implementation of Junior Achievement’s new Hispanic Initiative program
